Adjusting entries consist of debits and credits to a balance sheet account and to an income statement account. It is a direct relationship. When a balance sheet account is adjusted, there is an effect in an income statement account. An entry that involves all balance sheet accounts or all income statement accounts is not an adjusting entry. An adjusting entry affects asset, liability, and equity and the related income and expense accounts, and the financial position and performance of the entity.
