Learning how to teach in an online environment changes a teacher’s perspective in significant ways. The teacher becomes familiar with and performs new roles and tasks consistent with the characteristics and conditions of an online environment that are not existent in the face-to-face setting of the traditional classroom. Foremost among these changing conditions are distance and time. The teacher is separated from the learners and yet within easy reach. Time for learning seems unlimited. While the teacher spends less time with the learner physically, more time is available for engagement with the learner.
The online environment can be intimidating for one unprepared and lacking the necessary tools and preparation. Understanding the concepts, tools, and techniques of this new modality provides an opportunity for the teacher to be continuously relevant far into the future and prepares one for tomorrow’s teaching today.
